Description
FLEXIBLE MINI-SABBATICAL/LEAVE AWARDS Project Award Amount $40,000
Description of Grant Area As a multidisciplinary research career develops, faculty often need to master a new content area, learn new methods and skills, or focus more intensively on current research for a critical period of time. The Flexible Sabbatical/Leave Program is designed for clinical and translational research faculty, and will relieve them of non-research responsibilities for 3-6 months. Eligible faculty (see below) will complete a structured application describing the value and goals of the activities to be pursued, the methods for achieving these goals and how the activities will extend the current research program.
Each funded grant will have a maximum budget of $40,000 and may be used for partial investigator salary support. Projects are for one year and are not renewable. To determine what is allowable and what is unallowable please refer to the application form.
A progress report is expected at the end of and one year following the funding period, identifying resulting publications and subsequent funding recruited to support the expanded/extended projects. Any resulting publication must directly cite CTSI SOS Center funding.
The proposed research must be clearly justified as being on the path to potential use in humans.
Note: As a general rule, within any category, priority is given to applicants who have never received funding in that category, except for the Fogarty International Training Awards in HIV/AIDS and International Mentored Scientist Award Program in HIV/AIDS.
Eligibility:
All UCSF and CTSI associated institutional faculty in any series may apply. Preference will be given to faculty at Junior ranks (Assistant and early Associate) with a demonstrated need for release time. Full professors are not eligible for this award mechanism.
Criteria for Review
- Current active research program, with at least 50% time allocated to research.
- Demonstrated need for 3-6 months release time from all patient care and teaching.
- Clear goals and objectives for release time; quality of the proposed activities to be pursued during the leave period; description of how these activities will enhance or re-direct the research program for continued success.
- Clear statement from the Department Chair in writing that, if an award is made, the awardee will be relieved of non-research obligations during the award period, and will not then be overloaded once the award period is over.
Note: Clinical and translational research includes bench to bedside/laboratory to human (T1) translational research, clinical research, and bedside to the community/evidence to practice (T2) research.
