Pilot Award Program in T2 (Bedside-To-Community) Translational Science

Temporarily Discontinued

Project Award Amount $15,000

Description
UCSF has many clinical and translational research programs with enormous potential to bring clinical innovations to patients and communities in a timely, efficient manner. The mission of the CTSI Health Policy Program is to work with each CTSI program to foster the spread of translational research that addresses barriers to the adoption of evidence-based medicine in clinical settings and communities, and that promotes new strategies for increasing the adoption of clinical innovations.

These pilot projects will support preliminary research using human subjects, organizational, or clinical/administrative data to address questions related to the promotion of evidence-based medicine in clinical settings and communities. Pilots should be carried out by teams representing clinical, social science and/or population research disciplines. Use of funds to develop new partnerships between clinical researchers and researchers from other disciplines is strongly encouraged. Pilot research should collect data for publication and/or to support applications for larger funding through alternative mechanisms/sources.

Examples of research topics are listed below but are by no means inclusive:

  • Assessing organizational barriers to implementation of a new therapy for substance abuse.
  • Estimating the cost and cost-effectiveness of a new diagnostic test.
  • Aligning provider reimbursement structure with clinical guidelines for management of diabetes.
  • Inventory of federal and state laws regarding health-related taxation of ingredients in commercially-marketed foods.

Projects focusing on bench or clinical research or on T1 translation (from bench-to-bedside) are not eligible for support under this award.

Eligibility
UCSF faculty in any series, including adjunct and professional research series may apply. Post-doctoral fellows are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to faculty at junior ranks (assistant and early associate).

Who's Eligible: Fellows, Post Doc, Instructors, Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, Professors.

Who's Not Eligible: Residents, Specialists

Criteria for Review
Proposed projects must meet CTSI criteria of T2 translational science (bedside to the community, or evidence to practice).

Evaluation criteria will be as follows. Each of the criteria will be considered in assigning the overall score, weighted as appropriate for each application.

  1. the scientific strength of the proposal (including significance, approach, and innovation);
  2. the potential of the proposal to lead to a publication and/or fully-funded independent research grant; and
  3. the qualifications and potential of the applicant, including availability of mentoring for junior applicants.

Award Administration
Projects are for one year and are not renewable. To determine what is and is not allowable, please refer to the instructions.

All funding agencies require progress reports if an award is received. The number and timing of those reports varies between the agencies. Detailed information about this will appear in the respective funding agencies Award Letter.

CTSI-SOS cannot fund any international projects or expenses.

K Career Development awardees cannot receive salary support from this award.

*NIH base salary cap. Fully justify all requests. Generally PI partial salary support should not exceed 10%. Multiple PIs can decide how to distribute that 10% salary support among them (e.g., 5%/5% or 6%/4%).

** Travel is restricted to reaching project sites.

CTSI-SOS cannot fund any international projects or expenses

  1. Budget Justification: Clearly and fully justify all costs.
  2. NIH Bio-sketch of Principal Investigator(s), Co-Investigator(s) and UCSF Faculty Mentor(s) (4 page maximum): Use Form "PHS 398/2590" from the NIH grant applications (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/biosketch.doc) with other support pages. Include active, pending, and planned proposals. Include percent effort, total direct costs (current year) and potential overlap with the current proposal. Include bio-sketch for both PIs of a multi-PI application.
  3. Letter of support: Provide a letter of support from the department chair or other unit head. In addition, for junior investigators, department chairs/unit heads should comment on the independence of the applicant and availability of research space and other resources for the proposed research. Include the letter of support at the end of your PDF proposal and address it to the RAP Committee. If there are multiple (two) PIs, a letter of support is required for both PIs. If PIs are in the same department, the chair can vouch for both PIs in a single letter.
