PILOT AWARD PROGRAM IN T2 (BEDSIDE-TO-COMMUNITY) TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCE.

Project Award Amount

  • Up to $15,000 for projects taking place in the U.S. or abroad.

Description of Grant Area
UCSF has many clinical and translational research programs with enormous potential to bring clinical innovations to patients and communities in a timely, efficient manner. The mission of the CTSI Health Policy Program is to work with each CTSI program to foster the spread of translational research that addresses barriers to the adoption of evidence-based medicine in clinical settings and communities, and that promotes new strategies for increasing the adoption of clinical innovations. The Health Policy Program will provide pilot funding for T2 translational research projects, with a total program budget of $40,000 available this year.

These pilot projects will support preliminary research using human subjects, organizational, or clinical/administrative data to address questions related to the promotion of evidence-based medicine in clinical settings and communities. Pilots should be carried out by teams representing clinical, social science and/or population research disciplines. Use of funds to develop new partnerships between clinical researchers and researchers from other disciplines is strongly encouraged. Pilot research should collect data for publication and/or to support applications for larger funding through alternative mechanisms/sources.

Examples of research topics are listed below but are by no means inclusive:

  • Assessing organizational barriers to implementation of a new therapy for substance abuse.
  • Estimating the cost and cost-effectiveness of a new diagnostic test.
  • Aligning provider reimbursement structure with clinical guidelines for management of diabetes.
  • Inventory of federal and state laws regarding health-related taxation of ingredients in commercially-marketed foods.

Projects focusing on bench or clinical research or on T1 translation (from bench-to-bedside) are not eligible for support under this award.

Pilot projects will normally have a maximum budget of $15,000 and may be used for partial investigator salary support. This funding does not support travel (unless to/from a project site) or equipment.

  1. The number of grants awarded is determined by funding available.
  2. The funding will last for a one-year period.
  3. All applicable human subjects approval must be obtained before funding can be released.
  4. If applicable: All funded research conducted in an international setting must have both UCSF and international institution CHR approval.
  5. 5. A final progress report will be required (reports should reference subsequent funding acquired, research goals met, posters, publications, etc.), and in some cases an interim report will be required.

Eligibility
All UCSF and CTSI associated institutional faculty in any series may apply. Post-doctoral fellows are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to faculty at junior ranks (assistant and early associate).

Criteria for Review
Proposed projects must meet CTSI criteria of T2 translational science (bedside to the community, or evidence to practice).

Applications that are complete, submitted by the official deadline, and meet eligibility requirements will be evaluated by an appropriate review committee convened by the CTSI Health Policy Program.

Evaluation criteria will be as follows. Each of the criteria will be considered in assigning the overall score, weighted as appropriate for each application.

  1. the scientific strength of the proposal (including significance, approach, and innovation);
  2. the potential of the proposal to lead to a publication and/or fully-funded independent research grant; and
  3. the qualifications and potential of the applicant, including availability of mentoring for junior applicants.
